Without knowing it, lots of women are putting dirt on their skin first thing in the morning. Make up brushes are putting bacteria and debris on your clean fresh skin unless you are taking good care of them. If you are in Pagosa, you can bring them by and we can examine under our forensic medicine scanner! No matter what you can see, there is bacteria living in those bristles. We can promise you that.

You can use any organic cleaning product to help keep them fresh and clean. We like to use our anti-cootie soap foamers to brush a little clean love. Give a good scrub and dry in the sun.

Makeup brushes can be an expensive investment. And, like any other investment, we want a great return on that investment. One of best ways to ensure that will happen is proper brush care. One of the best things you can do for your brushes is to clean them - regularly. Clean them when they are first purchased and clean them on a regular basis to remove old makeup, dirt, debris, bacteria, oils and dead skin cells.

One of the greatest benefits to keeping your brushes clean is softness! Yes, did you realize that makeup buildup, especially foundation, makes your brushes feel scratchy? If you have sensitive skin, cleaning your brushes regularly will help them stay soft and lush! Your skin will thank you!

How often should you clean your brushes?

Foundation Brushes - minimum once a week

Brushes used for finishing powders and bronzers - once a week

Blush Brushes - one a week

Eyeshadow Brushes - every 2-3 days

Eyeliner Brushes - after every use especially if you use an eyeliner sealant.

For those that suffer with acne, you will greatly benefit from keeping your foundation brushes clean at all times. To cut down on cleaning time, rotate brushes so you always have a fresh clean one to use.

How to clean your brushes:

First, you want to wet the hairs under the faucet with tepid to warm water with the hairs pointing downwards - this will help prevent any water getting in to the handle.

Next you want to use a mild shampoo, liquid hand soap, or pure castile soap. Our favorite – Queen Bee organic skin care’s Anti Cootie soap foamer is just the ticket. Squirt a little soap directly on the bristles and work throughout the hairs. Gently squeeze the hairs from base to hair tips over and over adding a little water at a time. Rinse and repeat until the water runs clear. Make sure when you are rinsing to keep the brush hairs pointing down.

After your brushes have a good bath, brush them off a little on a clean paper towel and lay them to dry on their side on a paper towel or a regular towel. It is also a good idea to reshape the brush at this point in time to prevent splaying. Lay kabuki’s and any other stand-up brush on their side. Never leave them to dry brush hairs up in a brush holder. The water can run down in to the handle and loosen the glue holding the brush together over time.

Lastly, let brushes dry completely before using. Dry time will depend on size and brush density.

Keeping your brushes in good condition by washing frequently will provide you with years of beautiful makeup application! Now that’s a great investment!

As the Queen was waiting for a monthly Mountain High Gardener’s meeting to start on Wednesday something very nice happened. She was asked to participate in a marketing campaign to raise money and awareness for a women’s health initiative. They weren’t asking for a donation though. They wanted to feature women who inspire as the campaign and they chose the Queen Bee of organic skin care. They are featuring ten women from Pagosa Springs that their board found to be inspiring. We get to then repeat the honor by offering a testimonial about another woman who inspires us.

Of course we said. Yes. Make my day! Sure. Talk about being flattered.

Then the best part, we got to start thinking about inspiration. What it means and who impacts us the most. Tears began to flow and so many powerful, considerate and giving women came to mind.

After some contemplation including the wonderful clients that stay in touch, friends (including the crabby ladies in pagosa) and fabulous extended families, one person jumped to the front of the line.

Grandma Killey (Frances Killey) lived in an era where strong women were not in fashion, but no matter. She was 4′11″ and the most powerful force. She ran the farm, family and household with hard work and tenacity. She put herself through college to become a teacher in rural Illinois were all twelve grades of school were taught in a one room schoolhouse. She traveled to far way places including Singapore (think of that in 1930’s). She attended many political conferences, was an active member of her community of Monmouth, was President of the groups she believed in, grew and raised her own food, could skin a rabbit and cooked it for dinner, well read about a variety of religions, maintained strong family ties, was a pro choice advocate, helped people in need, and had a happy marriage for more than fifty years.

The whole idea of Inspiration got us thinking about ways to help support this effort. In town, the marketing program works like other promotions where you buy a tribute heart shaped memorial card and you write a message of thanks or gratitude and they are hung in public places.

We would like to inspire you to take a few minutes this morning and contemplate the women that have made an impact for you. In order for this campaign to work online, we have added a component to our website.

If you would like to see more radiant skin, peels are a great way to achieve a dramatic change.

Peels are a great way to improve the texture of skin. The service we perform at Queen Bee is a medium grade peel called a ViPeel. It works well for pigmentation issues in addition to clearing and renewing skin. We have been offering these services since Spring of 2010. October and April are great months to experience these services.

The peel takes about 20 minutes at the hive, then you use towelettes to “activate” the peel at home. Your skin will begin to peel around the mouth three days after your appointment. The peeling lasts several days. So after about one week, the ph levels in your skin are restored and you can see the results.

The benefits include renewed levels of elasticity and clean clear skin. The skin is fresh, new, unwrinkled and hydrated. pigmentation often lifts off and disappears completely.

These peels are also preventative measures for skin cancer. Pigmentation clusters fade and become less noticeable. Fine lines disappear, also. This peel does create a full facial sloughing and has a couple days where you would want to stay out of the elements. It also requires additional attention to sun block. This service is done once and costs $300 which includes the post peel skin care products you will need to be comfortable and get a great result.

The Queen even lost her voice for a week. Well, our cure-all for sensitive noses is back to heal your wounds. Omega 9? Say yes with Marula Oil.
