The new owners of Chimney Rock Farms are stocking in two of Queen Bee’s most popular summer items. Butta our Gardner’s Hand Cream and Bee Sunny mineral powder sunscreen in a retractable brush will both be available for sale at the store on Highway 160. The officially open for summer seven days a week 9 - 6pm on May 21st. The Bower family is committed to buy local and source the finest, freshest available.

Butta is made with tropical lipids including palm, avocado and coconut. It made locally in Pagosa Springs by hand at the hive on Lake Pagosa. The scent is a proprietary essential oil blend that people love and works as a natural bug deterrent. Most people notice the scent of lemongrass, but there is lavender, catnip and camphor to keep the pesky biters away. Butta comes in a 2.5 oz jar for $20 retail.

Bee Sunny is a new form of sunscreen made with inert metal oxides of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. The combination creates a broad spectrum UVA and UVB barrier that doesn’t break down with sun exposure or heat. The powder lasts for years in the tube and sticks to your skin in the same way that a mineral makeup binds with the dead skin cells and holds on. You can’t even tell you have the powder on when applied properly in a grid pattern. There is no scent and no color, it is translucent. It doesn’t move around and get in your eyes and there are no oils to trap dirt or cause skin reactions. We find this new powder form of sunscreen much easier to apply on the go, use with kids, and reapply while outdoors.

We hope the locals will continue to support the efforts of the new owners of Chimney Rock Farms and see what other new things they have in store for us! If you haven’t been out to the farm, pop in on your next jaunt to Durango! They are located on the left side of Highway 160 just past the big 90 degree turn in the highway after Chimney Rock.

About once a day, we get a client asking questions about the size of the particles in our Bee Sunny mineral powder sunscreen. The basic questions often include the topic of micronized and nano particles and the size of the particles in our sunblock. Many times the question isn’t written so that we can even answer it. They use both terms interchangeably. So, we thought it might help for us to help establish the terms for a discussion.

We found this very helpful, well written article on webMD:
http://blogs.webmd.com/health-ehome/2011/05/understanding-sunscreen-micronization-and-nanoparticles.html

It defines both Nano sized and Micronized particles in terms that are easy to understand…

Micronization is the process of reducing the average diameter of a solid material’s particles. Usually, the term micronization is used when the particles that are produced are only a few micrometers in diameter. But, the word is used ambiguously and a particle can actually be micronized until it becomes nano-sized.

Nano-sized means having a size measured in nanometers and a nano-sized material is not necessarily a nanoparticle. According to Kim Walls, MS, of Episencial, “a nanoparticle is any particle less than 100 nanometers in diameter. So, a material that has been reduced to 500 nanometers is NOT a nanoparticle because it is 5 times larger than 100 nanometers. (As a point of reference, a particle must be less than 50 nanometers to enter skin cells; less than 70 nanometers to enter the lungs.)”

This brings us to the question of safety. While the larger sized micronized particles appear to be both safe and effective, some questions still linger about the safety of nanoparticles. Preliminary studies seem reassuring for topical use, but there is still concern regarding inhalation or ingestion.

We hope this helps you understand the terms. Our sunblock has micronized titanium and zinc. So in terms of safety you want to understand both the ingredient you are researching and the size of the molecule. We have not found any evidence that zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are harmful when ingested. Zinc is a corner stone mineral found in most daily vitamins and titanium is used as a whitening agent and can be found in toothpaste. Titanium dioxide accounts for 70% of the total production volume of pigments worldwide. It is widely used to provide whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, plastics, papers, inks, foods, and toothpastes. It is present in almost every sunblock, where it helps protect the skin from ultraviolet light.

We think most of the concern about this topic stems from the idea that Titanium dioxide dust, when inhaled, has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen possibly carcinogenic to humans. The findings of the IARC are based on the discovery that high concentrations of pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer in rats exposed by inhalation and intratracheal instillation. The series of biological events or steps that produce the rat lung cancers (e.g. particle deposition, impaired lung clearance, cell injury, fibrosis, mutations and ultimately cancer) have also been seen in people working in dusty environments. Therefore, the observations of cancer in animals were considered, by IARC, as relevant to people doing jobs with exposures to titanium dioxide dust.

So, while we don’t see any immediate danger connected with the use of our product, We do suggest that while you are apply our sunscreen, you close your mouth. We don’t want you to inhale our sunblock and we don’t think you want to snort (for lack of better word) our Bee Sunny sunblock, either. With any skin care products, we hope you will use them for their intended purpose. In this case, better UVA and UVB broadspectrum coverage that can help you avoid exposure to the sun.

This story was originally written for the Pagosa Brat. We have updated the content and links, but the information is timely and worth repeating.

Skin Care in your teens—by Lynne Killey of Queen Bee Sauce

In my esthetics practices in Pagosa Springs and Denver I see a number of teens with skin related issues. I have found that the biggest contributing factors to teen breakouts are often stress and hormones, not lack of proper care. There are, however, lots of things you can do to help keep your skin clean and clear.

Mineral Makeups
Great! Right? Almost everyone loves these high sunscreen, light, powdery products (myself included). The bad news is that they tend to leave small particles on the skin that you can see with a magnifying lamp. They attach to little dead skin cells and need to be either chemically or physically exfoliated to be removed. You can our face paste as a way to physically slough off the mineral residue along with a little dead skin. You want to stick with products that are mild (chemically) and for sensitive skin. Another great tool is called a Clarisonic Mia. They make Clarisonic facial brushes in 5 different handles with different price points, but recently they released an acne brush head that can be used with any of them. It is designed for sensitive and acne prone skin. We recommend the Mia (the least expensive model) and this new brush head for a great start to healthy long term skin care.

Understanding Acne
It is created by an inflammatory response of the body in connection to Propionibacterium acnes. Commonly called P-Bacteria or P Acne. So you want to address both the irritation and the cooties. Not just one or the other for long term healthy skin. This can be done simply with a little wipe or spritz of either Lavender, Tea Tree or Thyme essential oil diluted with water. They are all excellent bacteria fighters.

Breakouts
No one likes them, and have you ever noticed that they come up right before you are scheduled to have your picture taken? It’s not a coincidence; they are often stressed induced. Instead of worrying about them, try a few tricks. Use warm compresses to get them to come to the surface more quickly. Then use a lancet (ask your esthetician for a few to keep in bathroom) to make a small slice that will allow the bacterial and white blood cells to flush out the debris. Again warm cotton compresses applied directly are the answer to help drain it.

Why not squeeze the little bugger? Well, it seems like an easy solution; however, the motion of squeezing the skin will often push the bacteria or debris farther down into layers of skin and force it to spread outward, making the pimple bigger and more inflamed. You will notice if you try this method, the pimple seems to be there for weeks. Can be painful and can leave scars. Using a quick, but well placed cut allows the bacteria an escape path and allows the skin to heal up in a day or two.

Topical solutions
Natural toothpaste is often made with baking soda, which works well to help dry out the blemish. To spot treat a breakout, you can just dab undiluted essential oil directly on a blemish. At Queen Bee, we found a naturally occuring nut oil called Tamanu Oil We use Tamanu in our esthetics practice to treat the swelling, redness and potential scarring from problematic acne. It is incredibly high in both anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as a spot treatment when the blemish is in active stage (where you can see discoloration) and to heal and help prevent scarring. It can be used a soothing, cooling masque with aloe vera too. It takes the redness out of skin more quickly than any other product we have tried.

Heat versus Cool
To bring a blemish up to the surface you need heat. All other treatments for acne should be cooling, soothing. You should try to avoid stimulating circulation in an affected area. It will allow the P Acne to spread. So you want to just dab topical treatments in the area.

Exfoliation
Physical exfoliation is anything scratchy. You can use lots of gentle products on your face including brown sugar or cornmeal, and I like my Javanese face paste (rice bran). You want to use something very gentle and include your hairline, neck and shoulder areas with physical exfoliation. These are all great to help prevent the buildup of dead cells which can clog the pores and create problems.

Chemical exfoliation is simple too. All the products you see that claim to be anti-aging include these chemicals. They are either alpha or beta hydroxyl acids. For younger skin I prefer beta hydroxyl acid or salicylic acid. It is molecularly larger so it sits more on the top of the layers of skin. I have two forms. One is in my organic liquid face wash called Fig Face Wash. This can be used daily or alternated with a non-exfoliating product like my Organic Lavender Foaming Face Wash. Salicylic acid in powder form is not widely known, but I find it to be more gentle and effective. My product is called Boost and I add it to the Face Paste for a three-times-a-week extra treat. The strongest form Queen Bee sells is a mild glycolic tonic. It can be used with cotton to wipe across skin to kill bacteria and help quicken the skin sloughing process. We recommend glycolic for teens that are very active. The sweat glands are little hair follicles and when we exercise hard they can become trapped. The glycolic dives deep into the layers of skin and breaks up the bonds holding the dead skin to the surface.

Quick Recipes for Facial Treats

Cucumber Mask
Make a tea using cucumber as your tea bag. Cut 2 big round slices that you will use to cover your eyes. Just cut up about half the cucumber. Place in a container that is safe for high heat. Now pour boiling water over it. After the water is infused with a strong scent of cucumber, you can strain it. Refrigerate the cucumber infused water until very cool (an hour in fridge or 5-10 min. in freezer). Then just use a clean fresh wash cloth and soak it in the cold liquid. Place the cucumber rounds directly on your eyes. Lie in a cool place with the wash cloth covering your face for 5-10 minutes. This a really great as a stress reliever and summertime home spa treat.

Lavender Love
Add 4-6 drops of lavender essential oil in about 1 tablespoon of cold aloe vera gel. Apply to your skin with a brush and allow it to remain on the skin for 3-5 minutes.

Everyone knows to cleanse their skin twice daily, but most people don’t realize that a single cleanse with a surfactant-based cleanser still leaves behind a film of oil-based debris, such as sunscreen, long-lasting make-up, pollutants and your skin’s own sebum (oil). The oil-based debris on your skin creates a barrier that your usual cleanser simply cannot fully penetrate. The result is a dull, congested complexion.

What can you do about it?

Perform the Pre-Cleanse that begins with Bee Clean. It is formulated with the plant-based oils that can melt the layers of oil-based debris on your skin because the oil molecules bond to each other, unlike the water molecules in your usual cleanser. These oils then emulsify when you add water, encapsulating and removing the trapped debris, and allowing your exfoliating facial wash to penetrate even further than before. While double cleansing with your traditional cleanser may partially remove oil-based debris, only the double cleanse that begins with Bee Clean can adequately penetrate layers of oily debris for complete removal, ensuring a more intense, more professional and more thorough level of clean.

Queen Bee’s Bee Clean precleanse is a highly effective make up remover. We have used oils blended with green apple fruit essence and green tea for the ultimate fresh scented cleanser! We hope the scent will make you swoon, but the results will keep you devoted. At the start, we are going to ship this product in two sizes: $24 Bee Clean two ounce squirt will be perfect for most consumers and clients that travel, and we made a larger 8 oz pump bottle for estheticians use as a back bar product.

Just one or two pumps at night will allow you to remove facial and eye make up with no harsh chemicals. Your skin will feel supple and smooth. If you have sensitive or dry skin, you will adore this new cleanser. It has all the strength you need to clean without leaving any dryness. This product (like all Queen Bee Skin Care) is made without animal testing or ingredients and is free of phthalates.

We are so pleased to announce a partnership between Parelli Natural Horsemanship located in Pagosa Springs and Queen Bee Skin Care makers of organic skin care products.

Starting in May, Queen Bee’s organic mineral sunscreen called Bee Sunny will be available to Parelli customers. They are calling it simply “Sunblock”. Call it what you will, but it is a clever new way to protect yourself from the elements during outdoor activities.

Many thanks to all the people who helped get this relationship started including Linda Parelli, Mark Weiler, Sue Shoemark, Hans Oss and Nicole Pfeiffer! For a small business like Queen Bee it makes a big impact allowing us to sell overseas in their key markets.

Bee Sunny is a refillable brush loaded with mineral powder sunblock that provides both UVA and UVB broad spectrum coverage. It is easy to apply on the go. Using both Zinc and Titanium Dioxide, the powder is translucent, but very effective. It doesn’t break down with sun exposure and is oil versus water soluable, so it wants to stick to your skin even with outdoor activities. With all sunscreen, you want to reapply as you are out and about, but this handy brush makes it much easier to stay protected. The brush retails for $32 or can be purchased in a jar with a sifter top for $22. Both products will be offered in person at events and online.

The Parelli method combines in-depth equine psychology and common sense communication techniques in a proven recipe for horse and rider success. It allows horse owners at all levels of experience (from trail rider to Olympic level Dressage rider) to achieve success without force, partnership without dominance and harmony without coercion. The wider goal is to help create a better world for horses and the people who love them through the non-profit Parelli Foundation.

The Queen has been researching light therapy (LED) for over two years. Searching for statistical data on the effects of LEDs in the red/amber spectrum and how they might impact redness in the skin, she has read every white paper and turned over many stones.

The result though, is a lovely new addition to our facial service offerings. Red spectrum LED light. The fancy name is photobiomodulation. It uses light in the far-red to near-infrared region of the spectrum and modulates numerous cellular functions. It’s anti-inflammatory results are well documented in an Age Management & LED study conducted in Hunt Valley Maryland at the Skin and Vein Institute where they combined laser procures with non thermal LED to enhance healing response. For more information on this study, click here.

It is soothing and healing. Over time this treatment reduces the depth of lines! With each twenty minute treatment, you stimulate cellular regeneration, elastin and collagen. You heal scar tissue allowing it to be restored to its original tone and texture. You will feel a tightening of the skin and notice a reduction in the appearance of large pores. One study included clients that had small biopsied skin segments showed actual thicker collagen fibers.

At Queen Bee, we strive to find innovative ways to turn back the signs of time while keeping in line with our belief in organic botanical healing. We hope you will find the time to add one of these treatments to your schedule. To book your Light Therapy facial, just give us a buzz : 970-316-2899 or QB@QueenBeeSauce.com

15 Things to Give Up in order to be Happy

Here is a list of 15 things which, if you give up on them, will make your life a lot easier and much, much happier. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering – and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy – we cling to them. Not anymore. Your skin is a mirror that shows your inner health, so let’s focus internally. Starting today, we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us and embrace positive change.

1. Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong – wanting to always be right – even at the risk of ending great relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain, for us and for others. It’s just not worth it. Whenever you feel the ‘urgent’ need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question: “Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?” Wayne Dyer. What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big?

2. Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you – situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are loved ones, coworkers, or just strangers you meet on the street – just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better will that make you feel.

“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond winning.” Lao Tzu

3. Give up on blame. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Stop giving your powers away and start taking responsibility for your life.

4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk. Oh my. How many people are hurting themselves because of their negative, polluted and repetitive self-defeating mindset? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you – especially if it’s negative and self-defeating. You are better than that.

“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” Eckhart Tolle

5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible. From now on, you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck in the wrong place. Spread your wings and fly!

“A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind” Elly Roselle

6. Give up complaining. Give up your constant need to complain about those many, many, maaany things – people, situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can make you unhappy, no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.

7. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to criticize things, events or people that are different than you. We are all different, yet we are all the same. We all want to be happy, we all want to love and be loved and we all want to be understood. We all want something, and something is wished by us all.

8. Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take of all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly.

9. Give up your resistance to change. Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change – don’t resist it.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls” Joseph Campbell

10. Give up labels. Stop labeling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open. “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about.” Wayne Dyer

11. Give up on your fears. Fear is just an illusion, it doesn’t exist – you created it. It’s all in your mind. Correct the inside and the outside will fall into place.
“The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” Franklin D. Roosevelt

12. Give up your excuses. Send them packing and tell them they’re fired. You no longer need them. A lot of times we limit ourselves because of the many excuses we use. Instead of growing and working on improving ourselves and our lives, we get stuck, lying to ourselves, using all kind of excuses – excuses that 99.9% of the time are not even real.

13. Give up the past. I know, I know. It’s hard. Especially when the past looks so much better than the present and the future looks so frightening, but you have to take into consideration the fact that the present moment is all you have and all you will ever have. The past you are now longing for – the past that you are now dreaming about – was ignored by you when it was present. Stop deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all life is a journey not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future, prepare yourself, but always be present in the now.

14. Give up attachment. This is a concept that, for most of us is so hard to grasp and I have to tell you that it was for me too, (it still is) but it’s not something impossible. You get better and better at with time and practice. The moment you detach yourself from all things, (and that doesn’t mean you give up your love for them – because love and attachment have nothing to do with one another, attachment comes from a place of fear, while love… well, real love is pure, kind, and self less, where there is love there can’t be fear, and because of that, attachment and love cannot coexist) you become so peaceful, so tolerant, so kind, and so serene. You will get to a place where you will be able to understand all things without even trying. A state beyond words.

15. Give up living your life to other people’s expectations. Way too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They live their lives according to what others think is best for them, they live their lives according to what their parents think is best for them, to what their friends, their enemies and their teachers, their government and the media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing everybody, with living up to other people’s expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, what they need….and eventually they forget about themselves. You have one life – this one right now – you must live it, own it, and especially don’t let other people’s opinions distract you from your path.

The Queen agrees in principle with the anti-aging benefits of Retin A, but the ingredients found in the paraben loaded creams were just too much to take. Most clients have a hard time with redness and itchy skin in the Rockies when trying to use retinoids. Give us two months, and we will give you less overall wrinkles, they will be more subtle and overall the elasticity of your skin will be boosted. All these results without any of the side effects like redness, photo-sensitivity, irritation, parabens, and perscriptions needed for Retin A. Queen Bee would like to introduce Bee Organic - mock retin A.

We have been hard at work for more than two years looking for more organic solutions to the problem. What we discovered is a peptide (which is just 3 molecules combined) that produces the same results, but without the nasty chemicals. Our mock retin A with some pretty good data behind it. See our findings below.

More research information on our Mock Retin A Peptide:
Clinical study included two panels of 23 volunteers used two creams one on each side of their face. On one side, we used a 3% saturation of our peptide, the other cream was a placebo. The volunteers used the creams twice daily for 56 days. Anti-wrinkling and lifting efficacy was assessed by profilometry (which studies roughness) and photography. The variations where quite noticeable. In terms of the overall surface occupied by deep wrinkles our product did 10x better than the placebo. In wrinkle depth, density and volume we did 2 - 5x better. For roughness, we did almost 14x better. In lifting effect, the difference was 4x better. The main finding is that wrinkles are actually 45% less deep in just two months of use.

A secondary measurement device was used to to measure skin elasticity and tone. This research is done with a cutometer (Cutometry) applying a gentle negative pressure to a small area of skin to measure the elastic displacement of the skin from its initial position as well as the elastic recovery following maximum negative pressure. In the same two panels of volunteers the tone was improved by almost 20% and the elasticity by almost 10%.
