This year’s LASSO Ladies Only Bling Fling will be held at Winslow at the Shire in Pagosa Springs. This years theme is LASSO - Bling Fling - Dazzling Delights and it will be Tuesday, October 12, 2010 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. It will sure to be a “must do” event for the season. Last year, the event was very successful and it was talked about for weeks. Take a minute to mark it on your calender and to do list now!

The event is a fashion and beauty showcase designed to create awareness and support for the on-going care of horses or other large animals that are no longer able to be cared for by their owners or have no place left to go. These animals have been given another chance to survive in a safe and caring environment and at the same time have given back to students and athletes involved in Special Olympics Horseback riding camp or Mary Kurt-Masons Special Talents class.

LASSO is an incredible Pagosa Springs based charitable group that has acquired it’s 501 - 3C status. They are a concerned and dedicated group of people whose mission is to ensure no large animal in the Four Corners area suffers needlessly as a result of human or natural consequence.

Some of their area activities include:
Implementing educational programs to help all large animal owners understand the intricacies and responsibilities inherent in caring for their animals, and the negative impact on those animals if that care is not given.

Working with local and regional law enforcement agencies to provide assistance, refuge, and medical treatment for animals that are found to be suffering from abuse, neglect, or injury.

Working with animal owners to provide assistance, shelter, and care for animals whose owners cannot or will not, due to medical, financial or other legitimate reasons, be able to care for their animals either temporarily or on a medium term basis.

Rehabilitated horses awaiting adoption provide therapeutic riding for special needs individuals and the Annual Pagosa Springs Special Olympics Riding Event.

Assist in finding permanent loving homes for animals that have been rehabilitated and have been surrendered to Lasso.

Under-eye Bags Become a Thing of the Past. Allergies, stress and lack of sleep wreak havoc on the eye area, giving an otherwise glowing face a puffy, washed out, not-so-perky appearance. Get those peepers under control with Goodbye Mr. Puffy, Queen Bee Sauce’s simple and deliciously fresh solution to tired, irritated eyes.

Goodbye Mr. Puffy is a refreshing, skin-soothing tea made of licorice root, spearmint and fennel. It prevents inflammation and redness, tightens puffy skin and shrinks dilated blood vessels– all major attackers to a radiant face. As a home spa kit, Goodbye Mr. Puffy contains everything needed to pamper and revive- a muslin bag filled with this special tea blend, detailed preparation instructions, cotton eye compresses and liquid evening primrose, a topical eye area moisturizer.

Each ingredient in Goodbye Mr. Puffy is specifically chosen for extreme effectiveness in eye area relief. Licorice, the most powerful ingredient, has been long used in Chinese and natural remedies and is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. Glycyrrhizinic acid, the compound responsible for licorice’s beauty contribution, stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, the body’s own anti-inflammatory adrenal steroid.

Fennel, a plant with usable and edible seeds and leaves, stimulates skin cells with large amounts of vitamins and minerals. Packed* with a high content of the powerful antioxidant vitamin C (93mg per 100g) to neutralize free radicals and control inflammation, along with an impressive supply of iron (2.7mg per 100g), calcium (109mg per 100g), folic acid (100 mcg per 100g) and carotene (4.7mg per 100g), fennel nourishes and recharges the delicate skin around the eyes.

While the invigorating smell is reason enough to include spearmint in Goodbye Mr. Puffy, this ingredient also holds real healing properties. Spearmint, a milder choice than peppermint, actually shrinks dilated blood vessels and stimulates slight oil production, pumping some shine back into the skin.

The home spa kit Goodbye Mr. Puffy gently and naturally relieves eye irritation and reduces swelling under the eyes, quickly transforming a lack luster gaze to brightness. Get some relief from irritated eyes and say Goodbye Mr. Puffy!

In the little town of Pagosa Springs, we take our gardening seriously. Pagosa Feed & Seed was very selective about carrying our gardener’s hand cream, but after trying it they were finally convinced. At first whiff, the lemongrass will convince you to give it a try, but the bug deterring essential oils will keep you coming back. It has been a popular selling gift item since we introduced it in 2005, but really took off as one of our big success stories after a little story appeared in the Denver Post.

Organic skin care maker Queen Bee created a thich, super hydrating gardener’s hand cream called Butta. It is free of chemicals including harmful parabens. So if you are out and about in Pagosa and want to try a lovely hand cream, pop into Pagosa Feed and Seed (formerly Pagosa Nursery). It located on Bastille behind Ace Hardware.

Say Yes to Beautiful Flower Beds- Say No to Chemical-Laden Lotion

Gardening season is just around the corner, and we know what that means– seriously neglected hands fallen victim to the sun, dirt, bugs and joint stress from minute and repetitive motion. The easy way to remedy gardening woes would be to simply not garden, but if you’re like most, treasuring a fine rose bush or bougainvillea bloom like a rare glass of wine, you need a solution that will keep you outdoors among the plants you love.

Enter Queen Bee Skin Care’s Butta Gardener’s Hand Cream (the color which comes from carrot oil and texture so closely resembled whipped butter it was a crime to moniker this hand cream anything else). After an exhaustive day in the dirt, Queen Bee Skin Care’s founder Lynne Killey could find no product that successfully hydrated and simultaneously soothed her cracked, achy hands. To the kitchen it was, where coconut, palm and mango oils were combined to create the lavish, intensely hydrating Butta.

Queen Bee’s fresh-from-the-kitchen hand creams are full of hydrating butters and oils- without the harmful chemicals found in traditional skin care products; this makes them a safe, pure remedy for overworked gardener hands. Most lotions and creams use a dangerous set of preservative chemicals called parabens (see attached fact sheet). Butta Cream is a natural, healthful solution to using lotions laden with parabens.

The rich oils used in Butta were picked specifically for their individual therapeutic properties (and to avoid nut oils, which often produce allergic reaction). Coconut oil is readily absorbable and creates smoothness while penetrating deep into the skin’s layers, strengthening the underlying tissue. Palm oil is known for its’ high level of carotenoids (which are converted to vitamin A in the body). Externally, vitamin A neutralizes harmful elements in the skin, improving infection resistance, skin elasticity and wrinkle depth. Melting quickly upon contact with the skin, mango oil gives Butta Cream a luxurious, heavy-yet-silky feel.

Other scrumptious ingredients added to the oils in Butta create a potion hard to pass up. Cinnamon, lemongrass and lavender oils fragrantly combine, keeping bugs away sans the overwhelming ‘bug-spray’ smell (but beware, this might leave you deeply inhaling your hands). Camphor oil readily soothes aching muscles and joints while aloe quickens healing of sun-drenched skin.

The idea of “shop local” is not a new one, but in tough times the impact can be dramatic.

According to a research study done in Virginia, the results are shocking. The study showed that if each person in the state of VA shopped at a local farmer’s market and spent just $10, the economic impact would be over a billion (yes Billion with a B) in local revenues.

With tough times in our town, shopping local is more important than ever. Even one small purchase allows for a trickle effect in spending.

Think Happy Cows.

Consider the impact of trucking, fuel exhaust, big machine environments versus products made here in the state of Colorado with love, attention to detail, low stress factors and often freshly picked, baked or brewed consumables! Mass produced produced like skin care are made in a commercial production facility, trucked to a warehouse, packed by machines, repackaged into flats and pallets, trucked to a warehouse, the as orders are filled they go to distribution centers, then to retail stores all before you ever see the bottle. Hand made organic skin care products like Queen Bee skin care are made in small batches. The ingredients come to us and we formulate, package, distribute, and sell direct to the public without the bottles and materials ever leaving our little town. A series of worker bees pick up “kitted” projects, hand label and return them, but they are always surrounded by people who care about our environmental impact and the quality of the materials.

If spending $10 at a local farmer’s market to create a billion, then consider if you choose to shop more locally for 10% of your overall household spending. Just think of what kind of impact we could make.

Many of you Queen Bee Sauce fans know that we work hard to be green. We recycle all the materials that our vendors ship us. We reuse packing materials and shred paper. The Queen composts with worms and mulch piles. We don’t produce lots of printed marketing materials and send out paper mailers and catalogs. Our products are produced for retail without extra layers of packaging. Our products are made with attention to the source of each ingredient to ensure we are walking lightly on this green earth.

If you haven’t already considered the reasons to switch to organics in your skin care, let us give you something to ponder…

Why switch to organic skin care products?
Your skin is your barrier to the world, keeping you safe from bacteria and the elements. Traditionally formulated skin care products contain chemicals that you wouldn’t consider eating or drinking, yet because we absorb products into our blood stream through our skin (think of a nicotine patch or “the pill”) that is what we are doing.

Take a look in your bathroom to see what ingredients are listed on your favorite products. They may be new formulations that are healthy, but often you find words like Tricolsan (common in hand sanitizers), Sodium Laurel Sulphate (found in things that foam it is a strong detergent and car degreaser), and five kinds of parabens (linked to breast cancer used as a preservative in lotions) that you might see. These three top the list of nasty chemicals found in beauty products. To test your current products look them up for free: www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

The good news is switching to new products may be an easy way to both save money and go green. Lots of new small companies create fresh skin care products with attention to the overall health of our consumers. We make smaller batches and often hand-make our products in order to ensure quality control and eco-conscious choices for sourcing and packaging. Even the top lines of organic skin care products will be half the cost of similar products sold through department stores. They often have better quality ingredients with less glamor packaging.

So as we cherish the bright green grass that our summer storms have delivered, what better way to bring a smile to our faces than start a fresh green sale.

Save some green! Wednesday - Friday this week only save 15% storewide on all online only sales!
Tread softly in our world eco-systems. Indulge your skin with the most healthful, nourishing and sweet smelling treats! Consider making a switch to fresh from the kitchen skin care. For more information about organic skin products sign up for our blog! www.QueenBeePagosa.com

Okay, so we have been having some cold afternoons in Pagosa Springs. As the calender rolled over to August though, a reminder popped up about staffing for the Denver Holiday Mart! Oh My. Already. Holiday shows! Well, at least the snow removal is still far off in the distance.

We hope you will mark your calenders though. This year the show runs from Thursday October 14th through Sunday October 17th. The Queen Bee of skin care will be there with a big booth on the main floor this year.

For more information about the market go to http://www.jld.org. The Denver Jr League does a lot of good work in the metro area and a percentage of your purchases and tickets go into funds that support their causes. To learn more about Queen Bee go to www.QueenBeePagosa.com to shop online www.QueenBeeSauce.com or give us a buzz 970/731-3690
